#FeatureFriday- MCHES® Spotlight

By Misozi Houston posted 07-28-2023 11:00

After meeting recertification requirements and completing a certification cycle, Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES®) can advance their credential by taking the Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES®) examination.

NCHEC connected with Daytheon Sturges, Ph.D., MPAS, PA-C, DFAAPA, and asked a few questions regarding his path from CHES® to MCHES®. If you are a five-year CHES® hesitant about advancing to MCHES®, please read on for more on Dr. Sturges' journey. MCHES® Exam information, deadlines, and requirements can be found here

How long were you CHES® before deciding to upgrade your credential?

I was CHES® from 2018 to 2023. I obtained the certification while pursuing my Ph.D. in Health Studies.

What prompted you to go from CHES® to MCHES®?

I upgraded my credential due to the work I had been doing regarding wellness education in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), belonging, and antiracism realms. I also work at the intersection of Clinical Medicine in my role as a Physician Assistant in Family Medicine and health promotion/health education. I found it appropriate for representation purposes so that others may seek the credential, but also an educational tool in order to expose more people to our professions.

What is your current role as an MCHES®?

I am currently an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine- Department of Family Medicine. I serve as the Department Vice Chair for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI). I am also the Associate Program Director for Regional Affairs and JEDI for the UW MEDEX Northwest Physician Assistant Program. I still practice clinically as well as in Family Medicine.

My career aspiration is to become a Dean in either Health Equity, Student Affairs, or both, and eventually a university President.

What tips can you provide for those considering the MCHES® certification?

Trust your skillset and the gifts that you offer the profession and the public. Let the test prove the skills you already have- the necessary advanced leadership skills that strategically serve your target populations.

Thank you for sharing your path to MCHES®, @Daytheon Sturges, and congratulations on your accomplishments!
